The 2026 Build Decision
Build with Claude Code, or hire an agency?
The newest question in software, answered by an agency with no ability to pretend the tools do not work: our own products and open source are built with Claude Code in the loop. Here is the honest split, including the cases where you should not hire us. Updated July 2026.
Should I build my MVP with AI coding tools like Claude Code or hire an agency?
If you are technical and have the time, try Claude Code or Cursor first; in 2026 they can genuinely ship an MVP. If you are non technical, or the product needs production stakes (payments, security, AI reliability), the tools cannot supply the engineering judgment, and an AI native agency is the honest route: HouseofMVPs builds with these exact tools daily and ships production MVPs at $7,499 fixed in 14 days, with a $3,999 POC entry. The honest split
| Situation | AI tools alone | AI native agency |
|---|---|---|
| You are technical and have the time | Claude Code or Cursor alone can genuinely ship your MVP | Only worth it to buy back your time |
| You are non technical | The tools still require engineering judgment they cannot supply | The honest route: $3,999 POC to $7,499 MVP, fixed |
| Speed to production | Days for a prototype; production hardening is on you | 14 days to production with hardening included |
| The invisible 30% | Auth edge cases, payments, security, deploys, evals: yours | Included in the fixed scope |
| Cost | $20 to $200 per month plus your months of time | $3,999 to $14,999+ fixed, custom plans beyond |
| When AI is the product | Tools write the code but cannot design the eval strategy | Evals, guardrails, and cost engineering are the deliverable |

Common questions
Should I build my MVP with AI coding tools like Claude Code or hire an agency?
It splits on one question: can you supply the engineering judgment the tools do not have? Technical founders with time can genuinely ship with Claude Code or Cursor alone in 2026, and should try. Non technical founders hit the invisible 30%, auth edge cases, payments, security, deployment, evals, where the tools need direction. HouseofMVPs is the transparent middle: an agency that builds WITH AI tools daily, publishes its methods in open source, and ships the production MVP at $7,499 fixed in 14 days. Can Claude Code really build a production SaaS by itself?
It can write most of the code; it cannot own the outcome. Production SaaS needs decisions no tool makes alone: architecture tradeoffs, security posture, payment edge cases, eval design for AI features, and the judgment of when generated code is wrong. Our own open source tools and live products are built with Claude Code in the loop, which is exactly why we know where the boundary is: the tool multiplies an engineer; it does not replace one for production stakes.
What does an agency add if AI tools write the code anyway?
The 30% that decides whether the product survives contact with real users: scope discipline, architecture, security hardening, payments that handle failure, evals and guardrails for AI features, deployment and monitoring, and accountability for the whole, at a fixed price with the risk on the agency. That layer is why AI native agencies are dramatically cheaper than conventional ones while shipping the same bar: the tools compress the hours, the engineering judgment stays.
What is the cheapest honest path if I cannot afford an agency at all?
Build a prototype with Lovable or Claude Code, validate demand with real users, and defer production spend until the signal is real. When it is, a $3,999 POC converts your validated prototype into owned production code in 7 days. The trap to avoid is shipping a tool generated prototype to paying customers as if it were production: the rework bill arrives with your first security incident or payment failure.
