How do I add AI features or an LLM like GPT to my existing SaaS product?

Short answer

Add AI to an existing product by picking one task users already do by hand, calling a hosted model through a thin service layer in your backend, and shipping it to a small group behind a flag. Keep the model away from your database: your code decides what data it sees and what it is allowed to do.

Six steps

  • Pick one task. Summarise this record, draft this reply, classify this ticket. Something users already do, where a good first draft saves time.
  • Collect examples. Thirty real inputs with the output you would accept.
  • Add a service layer. One module in your backend that calls the model, so the rest of your code does not know which provider you use.
  • Control the data. Send only the fields the task needs. Never give the model credentials or unrestricted database access.
  • Check the output. Validate structure, and keep a person in the loop for anything that changes customer data.
  • Ship behind a flag. Turn it on for a few customers, measure, then widen.

Choosing where the model runs

OptionGood forConsider
Hosted API from OpenAI, Anthropic or GoogleAlmost every first featureData terms and per token cost
The same models through your cloud providerTeams with existing cloud agreementsSlightly different features and limits
An open model you hostData that cannot leave your infrastructureYou run and scale the servers

Things that go wrong

  • Starting with a chatbot. A chat box is the hardest AI feature to make reliable. Start with a button that does one thing.
  • No budget limit. Set a spending cap and per user limits before launch.
  • Trusting the output. Treat it as a draft from a capable but careless assistant.
  • Building on a retired API. OpenAI removed its Assistants API on 26 August 2026. New work should use the Responses API.

Another direction to consider

Adding a model to your product is one direction. The other is letting customers reach your product from inside ChatGPT through a plugin. They solve different problems, and many products end up with both on the same API layer.

How HouseofMVPs handles this

We add AI to existing products at a fixed price: $5,000 for one system or workflow in 1 to 2 weeks, $15,000 across several systems. The work includes the service layer, output validation, cost controls and a monitoring dashboard, and the code is yours.

How long does it take to add one AI feature to a SaaS product?

One well chosen feature takes 1 to 2 weeks including testing, if your backend has a clean place to add it. Most of the time goes into examples, output checks and edge cases, not into the model call.

Will customer data be used to train the model?

That depends on the provider and the plan. The major API providers publish their data use terms, and business API traffic is generally handled differently from consumer chat. Read the current terms for your provider and plan before sending customer data.

Do I need to rebuild my product to add AI?

No. AI features are added alongside what you have, through a service layer in the backend. Your frontend, database and existing logic stay as they are.
