How long should it realistically take to build an MVP from scratch?
Short answer
A focused MVP takes 2 to 6 weeks to build once the scope is fixed. The build is rarely what makes it slow. Projects that run to several months almost always had an open scope, slow decisions, or integrations that depended on someone else. Fix those three and a first version in a month is realistic.

What decides the timeline
| Factor | Shortens it | Lengthens it |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | One core flow, written down | A feature list that keeps growing |
| Decisions | One person who answers the same day | A committee, or a founder who is travelling |
| Integrations | Services with public APIs and test accounts | A partner API that needs approval or a sales call |
| Design | A functional interface built from proven components | A custom brand system before the product works |
| Compliance | No regulated data | Health, payments or financial data with audit needs |
A realistic schedule for a 2 week build
- Days 1 to 2: scope signed, architecture decided, accounts created.
- Days 3 to 5: core flow working end to end, staging link shared.
- Days 6 to 10: remaining features, sign in, payments if needed.
- Days 11 to 12: testing with real data, fixes.
- Days 13 to 14: production deployment and handover.
Time you should add yourself
The build is one part of the calendar. Before it, allow a week to talk to users and write the brief. After it, allow time for app store review if you are shipping to phones, and for your own launch work. A founder who says an MVP took three months is usually counting all of that.
When it genuinely takes longer
- Two sided marketplaces, because both sides need a working product.
- Regulated data, because security and audit work cannot be skipped.
- Native apps on both platforms with offline use.
- Products whose core is a hard AI problem that has not been tested yet. Run a one week proof of concept on that part first.
How HouseofMVPs handles this
Our timelines are fixed with the price. Validate is 1 week for one core feature. Launch is 2 weeks for a production MVP with 3 to 5 features. Scale is 3 to 4 weeks for larger scope. A staging link arrives by day 5 on every build, and the clock starts when the scope document is signed.

Can an MVP really be built in 2 weeks?
Yes, when the scope is 3 to 5 features and decisions are made the same day. Two weeks is not enough for a marketplace, a regulated product or anything with an untested technical risk at its centre.
Why do some agencies quote 3 to 6 months for an MVP?
Usually because the scope is larger than a first version needs, or because the agency's process includes long discovery and design phases. Ask what would ship in the first month. If the answer is nothing, the plan is for a product, not an MVP.
Does using AI coding tools make MVPs faster?
It speeds up writing code. It does not speed up deciding what to build, getting API access from partners, or testing with real users, which are the usual causes of delay.
